The practice of naming devices, artificial intelligence systems and other machines after humans is quite common. People like to personify machines, making them feel more relatable and less intimidating. 

Examples of machines named after humans and with human-like names include Alexa (Amazon’s virtual assistant), Siri (Apple’s virtual assistant), Watson (IBM’s AI system), HAL 9000 (the AI from “2001: A Space Odyssey”), or R2-D2 and C-3PO (robots from Star Wars).

The tendency to anthropomorphize machines by giving them human names reflects human innate desire to connect with and understand the technology we create and use in our daily lives.
